STATE
NORTH DAKOTA CROP WEATHER REPORT

RELEASE DATE, WEEK ENDING DATE
Released: September 4, 2001
For Week Ending: September 2, 2001

ISSUE
ND-CW3501

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY
General: Warm and dry conditions across the state allowed the small grain
and canola harvest to move toward completion, according to the North Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. The small grain and canola harvest
continued well ahead of last year and the 5-year (1996-2000) average pace.
While the dry conditions were favorable for the small grain harvest, row
crops and pastures need moisture as they were showing signs of moisture
stress. An average of 6.8 days were suitable for fieldwork across the state
during the week.

Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies, at 49 percent adequate to surplus,
decreased from last week's rating of 67 percent adequate to surplus as a
result of another week of warm, dry conditions. Topsoil moisture supplies
were rated 16 percent very short, 35 short, 48 adequate and 1 surplus
compared to the five-year average of 11 percent very short, 24 short, 58
adequate and 7 surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT
Crops: Harvesting of the small grain crops made good progress last week and
continued to be ahead of last year and average. As of September 2,
combining of hard red spring wheat was 91 percent complete, durum 65
percent complete and barley 95 percent complete. This compares to 73, 43
and 82 percent combined on average, respectively. The canola harvest was
nearly three fourths complete, with 74 percent combined, compared to 61
percent last year and 44 percent average. The sunflower crop had 33 percent
of the acreage in the bracts turned yellow and beyond stage compared to 39
percent last year and 31 average. Dry edible beans and soybeans advanced to
48 and 10 percent mature and beyond, respectively, both behind average.

All crop conditions declined from last week, with the exception of
sugarbeets which remained unchanged. Soybeans were rated 61 percent good to
excellent compared to 68 last week and 52 last year. Corn was rated 70
percent good to excellent compared to 77 last week and 71 last year.
Sunflower was rated 71 percent good to excellent compared to 72 last week
and 68 last year.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE AND RANGE REPORT
Livestock: Pasture conditions continued to decrease due to the warm
temperatures and lack of rain. Conditions were rated 5 percent very poor,
16 poor, 43 fair, 34 good and 2 excellent. Hay condition was rated 94
percent of normal compared to 84 percent of normal last year. Second
cutting of alfalfa hay was 97 percent complete compared to 98 percent last
year. Other hay harvest was 94 percent complete, compared to 95 percent
last year. Stockwater supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 9 short, 84
adequate and 5 surplus.

WEATHER SUMMARY
Weather: Last week was dry across nearly all of North Dakota. A few storms
developed on Wednesday in the southeast, bringing some light rainfall to
the area. Temperatures started out warm, but cooled to near the seasonal
normal for the later half of the week.

Outlook, September 3-9: The jet stream situated over the southern Prairie
Provinces of Canada Tuesday will keep cooler air to the north, and is
allowing heat and humidity to again invade North Dakota. A cold front will
advance through the state on Thursday ushering in a marked cool down, but
only after bringing the threat of thunderstorms to the state Wednesday and
Thursday. Typical rainfall amounts could approach 1.00 inch, with heaviest
amounts appearing to be over the northern and western portions of North
Dakota. High temperatures will be in the 80s to low 90s Tuesday and
Wednesday, cooling to near 70 west and 80 east for Thursday. Friday through
Sunday will be dry and cool with highs in the 70s nearly statewide.
